The nine key components

The VR survey for the Company of the Year asked about attitudes toward nine key components in the working environment. The components are shown in the table below. A score is given for each component, from one to five, and together, these form the total score for, on the one hand, the companies that are shown in the list and, on the other, the total score of all responders. The weight of the components in the total score varies, with company management weighing most heavily (see discussion on the execution). Total scores have never been higher.

The nine key components

Management

Do employees believe that the workplace is well managed, and do they trust the management?

Morale

How do employees get on with others in the workplace?

Wage terms

Are employees satisfied with their wages?

Work facilities

Safety, technology, lighting, noise, cafeteria facilities, etc.

Flexibility

Scope to take time off, run errands and co-ordinate work and family life.

Independence at work

Initiative at work, overview, goals and self-confidence.

Company image

Employee experience of general views about the company.

Satisfaction and pride

Are employees proud of the workplace, and do they enjoy coming to work?

Equal rights

Do all employees have equal opportunities, irrespective of age, gender, origin, sexual orientation, religion or life stance?

The development of key components over the past few years are shown below. Please note that this takes account of all those who took part in the survey, not only the employees of the companies on the list. The total score shows the general attitudes of employees toward their workplace. The total score is lowest in companies in transport and transportation as well as in retail and services and highest in companies engaged in specialised services. It is higher in smaller companies than in large and lowest in the very largest with more than 150 employees.

The total score has not been higher in the survey, and this also applies to several of the key components. Satisfaction with morale, wages terms and company image has measured higher in previous surveys, and there was greater satisfaction as regards independence at work a few years ago. Attitudes toward key components vary considerably according to job title and sector. Managers are generally more satisfied than other employees as regards almost all key components, except when expressing satisfaction with the flexibility of the work. Employees engaged in driving, inventory and manufacture are more dissatisfied than others in most key components.

The development of scores from 2011 is shown below. Please note that these scores are based on the responses of all those who participated in the survey, not just those companies who made the list. These are, therefore, the responses of more than twelve thousand employees in the general labour market. Equal rights were first measured as a key component in 2016.
