International Day For The Elimination Of Violence Against Women

News - 25.11.2025

Stop Violence Against Women!

Today, 25 November 2025, is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. We support the campaign of UNI Europa Commerce and stand in solidarity with all women who face violence, harassment, and discrimination – at work, at home, and in society.

Women make up the majority of employees in retail and service sectors in Iceland and across Europe. Too many still face verbal abuse, sexual harassment, intimidation, and gender-based violence from customers, co-workers, and supervisors. New technologies, such as self-checkout systems, have increased the pressure – often by shifting the responsibility for safety and monitoring onto the employees.

We demand that:

  • Iceland ratifies and implements Convention No. 190 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) on violence and harassment in the world of work.
  • Companies establish clear procedures and protection plans against harassment and violence.
  • Survivors receive support, confidentiality, and safe ways to report violence.

Violence and harassment in the workplace are labour market issues – not private matters. Together, we can create workplaces where everyone is treated with respect, safety, and equality.
