Bereavement Leave

Here is the Bereavement Leave Act no. 77/2022, see here. (Icelandic only)

Bereavement leave is leave from paid employment, the right to which is established at the moment of the loss of a child younger than 18 years of age.

Benefits to parents who are eligible for benefits according to the provisions of the Act are provided by the Directorate of Labour. For further details, see the website of the Directorate of Labour.

Bereavement leave shall count as working time for the purpose of assessing work-related rights. The employment relationship shall remain unchanged during bereavement leave and employees are entitled to return to their jobs after its completion. If that it impossible, the job shall be a comparable one and commensurate with the terms of the employment contract.

A parent who exercises their right to bereavement leave may not be dismissed on the basis of a notification of that fact to the employer.
