VR, LÍV and the Fagfélögin condemn the interest rate hikes announced by the commercial banks before the weekend. The commercial banks reported close to ISK 100 billion in profit after taxes last year. That amounts to more than ISK 320 thousand for every adult in the country. There is room for manoeuvre there, and there lies the banks’ social responsibility.

Changes to the VR Sick Pay Fund

Changes to the VR Sick Pay Fund were approved at VR’s annual general meeting on 26 March. The changes are intended to respond to the fund’s deteriorating financial performance and enable it to meet its obligations.

The holiday bonus for VR members is ISK 62,000 in 2026 (based on full-time employment), and must be paid no later than 1 June. Full-time employment is defined as 45 weeks, excluding holiday, worked at 100% during the holiday year from 1 May 2025 to 30 April 2026.

Recognition of Prior Learning now available for tourist guides

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) to shorten studies against the approved curriculum of the Tourist Guide School, which operates at Kópavogur Upper Secondary School, is now available. The conditions for RPL are that the individual is at least 23 years old, has three years of work experience in the field, and has completed the matriculation examination or equivalent education.
