Maternity/Paternity Leave and Parental Leave

In 2000, a bill was passed by the Alþingi (Parliament) Maternity/Paternity Leave and Parental Leave. The main objectives of the law is to ensure a child‘s right to benefit from being with both parents and to make it possible for men and women to coordinate family life and work participation.

The Icelandic Alþingi passed a bill on the arrangements of state finances which includes an amendment to the Act on on Maternity/Paternity Leave and Parental Leave No. 95/2000.

The amendment entered into force on 1 July 2009 and applies to parents of children who are born, adopted or received into permanent foster care on 1 July 2009 or later.
