The pay gap follows - over a lifetime

Forum on women's pension

As the Year of Women 2025 draws to a close, it is fitting to discuss what comes after working life – retirement. The difference in earnings between women and men persists throughout life. Women not only earn less than men in the labour market, but they also receive lower pensions.

At this forum, experts will present current data on the gender gap, examine the pension system from an equality perspective, and explore ways to level the playing field.

Agenda
House opens for breakfast  at 8:15 and the forum starts at 8:45.

Opening remarks
Halla Gunnarsdóttir, Leader of VR

When It All Adds Up: The Gender Pay Gap and Pensions
Steinunn Bragadóttir, Economist at ASÍ, presents findings from a study conducted by ASÍ and BSRB in connection with the Women’s Year 2025. The study compiles data from Hagstofa Íslands on the income of women and men at retirement age.

Pension rights of men and women: the current situation and future prospects
Hrafn Úlfarsson, Specialist from the Pension Fund of Commerce – Lífeyrissjóður verzlunarmanna, reviews the difference in pension payments between genders within the fund, how the trend has developed, and future prospects. Hrafn will also go over the tools available to level the playing field, primarily the division of pension rights between spouses.

What’s Yours Is Mine – Gender Equality and Pensions
Steinunn Rögnvaldsdóttir, Gender Studies Scholar, sheds light on the importance of pension entitlements being accrued in line with participation in the labor market and wage payments, viewed through the lens of gender equality.
