Leader of VR Visits Mosfellsbær to Discuss Preschool Policy
In recent years, VR has actively opposed excessive increases in preschool fees and emphasised that further financial burdens should not be placed on parents of young children. Halla Gunnarsdóttir, Leader of VR, recently visited Mosfellsbær to learn more about preschool matters in the municipality, where fees are among the lowest in the country. Despite this, Mosfellsbær has successfully improved working conditions in preschools through cooperation with parents.
Regína Ásvaldsdóttir, Mayor of Mosfellsbær, and Þrúður Hjelm, preschool policy leader, provided an overview of the current state of the sector in the municipality, which has a high number of children and has been rapidly expanding. VR thanks Regína and Þrúður for their warm welcome.
“We are now seeing significant changes in preschools that may impact both the labour market and the structure of society. Many municipalities have chosen to regulate children’s attendance time by increasing fees for their parents. We believe this approach is highly misguided. It was therefore interesting to see that Mosfellsbær has chosen a different path while still achieving improvements in working conditions. We call for all changes to be made in close consultation with parents, and that their interests be taken into account in all decision-making,” says Halla Gunnarsdóttir, Leader of VR.
