Nearly half of VR members want a new currency
An equal share of VR members support and oppose Iceland joining the European Union, or 38%. Just under half — or 47% — support the adoption of a new currency. This can be seen in the results of a survey conducted among among members of VR earlier this year.
In the survey, respondents were asked three questions:
- How supportive or opposed are you to Iceland resuming accession negotiations with the European Union?
- How supportive or opposed are you to Iceland joining the European Union?
- How supportive or opposed are you to the adoption of a new currency in Iceland?
41% want to resume accession negotiations
Significantly greater support exists for adopting a new currency than for accession negotiations or joining the EU. Around 41% said they support resuming accession negotiations, 36% were opposed, and 23% neither support nor opposition. As previously stated, 38% supported Iceland joining the European Union and the same share were opposed, while 24% said they were neither supportive nor opposed. Meanwhile, 47% said they support adopting a new currency, while 29% were opposed. As in the other two questions, about a quarter selected the option neither nor.
About the survey
VR regularly conducts surveys among VR members, and this survey is part of that work. It was conducted in January 2026 among a sample of paying VR members aged 18 and older who had registered an email address in the union’s membership system. A total of 809 responses were received.
