North Iceland

There are many natural gems in North Iceland that attract people of all ages. To the west of Húnafjörður stands the cliff Hvítserkur, and up in the highlands, north below Kjalhraun, are the colourful Hveravellir, one of the largest hot springs areas in the country. In Skagafjörður are the legendary islands are Málmey and Drangey, and the people of Eyjafjörður boast majestic mountains and a more prosperous countryside than can be found in most places.

In Þingeyjarsýsla, nature is at once rough, mild and breathtaking. There is much to see; nowhere else can you find more of Mother Nature’s masterpieces. It is home to the waterfalls Goðafoss and Dettifoss, the second most powerful waterfall in Europe. Below it is Jökulsárgljúfur, one of the most majestic river gorges in Iceland. Further north are Hljóðaklettar and Ásbyrgi, a mysterious cliff hollow created by Jökulsá. South of Dyngjufjöll is Askja, an oval graben and volcano. Lake Mývatn and the countryside of the same name are famous for their natural beauty, and nearby are Dimmuborgir, which are a whole wonderland in and of themselves.
