Protest at Austurvöllur on September 10th!
Persistent inflation and high interest rates have had serious consequences for numerous households across the country, due to the continuously rising costs of essential goods and housing. The situation hits those hardest who have the least, and research shows that people hold little hope that the situation will improve anytime soon.
Despite this being the most pressing issue for the government in recent years, they have refused to take responsibility for the economic situation through their inaction and have left monetary policy entirely in the hands of the Central Bank. Tax cuts and unexpected major expenditures have not been met with corresponding revenue generation, market regulation is in disarray while oligopolies drive up prices. Promises of housing development have not been fulfilled. All of this exacerbates inflation, and the result is high interest rates, far beyond what households and businesses can handle.
We refuse to accept this inaction – the government must show solidarity with the country’s households in action! Immediately!
The Confederation of Icelandic Labour (ASÍ), BSRB, and the Icelandic Teachers' Union (KÍ) are calling for a protest at Austurvöllur on September 10th at 16:00. The working classes will protest against the government’s indifference towards high inflation and interest rates.
Enough is enough!
