Together always: united in diversity
The Global Union LGBTI Workers' International Symposium will be held electronically on May 17. The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) is celebrated every year on 17 May. It is a global campaign aimed at raising awareness about the ongoing discrimination, violence, and marginalisation faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and intersex people, and all of those with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics.
The campaign seeks to celebrate diversity and advocate for the rights of LGBTQIA+ people. At the symposium, entitled "Trade unions vs. LGBTPhobia", representatives from workers' organizations from around the world will speak. Among those who will speak are Cleve Jones from UNITE HERE in the USA, Phyll Opuku-Gyimah from UK Black Pride and Larry Rousseau frá Canadian Labour Congress.
The seminar starts at 14:00 May 17 but more information and registration can be found here.
We encourage members of the community to participate in the conference and the day and to show support on social media. Social media content related to International Day Against LGBTIQ can be tagged with the hashtags #IDAHOBIT and #IDAHOBIT2023.
Unions of working people around the world condemn the hostility and bigotry directed against LGBTQ+ people. It is a basic principle in our fight for equality that all working people should enjoy the same rights, respect and security in their jobs regardless of age, sex, sexuality, gender identity, nationality, race, religion or political opinions.
