At 10:00 this morning, Monday 9 March 2026, 1,012 VR members had cast their votes in the union’s electronic elections for the Board, which is an approximately 2.5% turnout. The elections began on Thursday 5 March and run until 12:00 noon on Thursday 12 March.

On International Women's Day

Today is International Women’s Day, and it has a history of more than a hundred years. For decades, VR has been at the forefront of the fight for women’s rights in the labour market and is not letting up. Financial independence is a fundamental prerequisite for women’s liberation, and although significant progress has been made in reducing the gender pay gap, women still earn only about 80% of men’s total pay.

Allocation of VR Holiday Houses in Winter

Applications have opened for holiday homes for winter 2026–2027 and will remain open until 15 March. It does not matter when during the application period members apply—everyone has the same chance of being drawn. Members who are allocated a holiday home have until 22 March to complete payment through My Pages.

Do you need help with your tax return?

VR members are offered one-on-one assistance with their tax return from a KPMG specialist. The assistance is available on 9 and 10 March from 08:30 to 16:00. Each appointment is 15 minutes.

Tourist guide training receives certification

Four schools in Iceland recently received certification for their tourist guide training from BSI in Iceland. The certification is based on the ÍST EN 15565:2008 standard, which covers requirements for the competence and training of tourist guides. It was Leiðsögn - Tourist Guide Union within VR that requested that BSI in Iceland assess the training programmes of education providers, and the schools that were assessed and passed the evaluation are Continuing Education at the University of Iceland, the Icelandic Tourist Guide School, Kópavogur College, and Continuing Education at the University of Akureyri.

VR representatives on the Board of Lífeyrissjóður verzlunarmanna

The VR Representative Council at Lífeyrissjóður verzlunarmanna (the Pension Fund of Commerce), LIVE, approved at a meeting on 25 February the appointment of two VR primary board members to the fund’s Board, as well as one alternate. Appointments are made for four years at a time, and half of VR’s representatives on the Board are appointed every other year, along with an alternate.

In the 2026 VR leadership elections, seven seats on the union’s board will be elected for a one-year term, with voting open from 5 March 2026 to 12 March. Ten people have put themselves forward, and you can read more about the candidates and their priorities on the VR website here.

Bookings open for available holiday houses on 26 February

On Thursday, 26 February, bookings will open for holiday houses that were not allocated this summer. It will be possible to book on VR’s holiday website from 10:00 in the morning. All VR members can apply for available holiday houses, regardless of whether they have rented a house in the past three summers or not.

Ten candidates running for the VR Board 2026–2027

The nomination deadline for the VR Board and Consultative Council for the 2026–2027 term expired at noon today, Wednesday, 11 February 2026. A total of 10 nominations were received for the Board and the Election Committee has ruled that all were legally submitted. No opposing list was submitted against the union’s list for the Consultative Council and it is therefore considered elected unopposed.
