Online lunch lecture - How do you like Iceland? Status of immigrants in the Icelandic labor market

April 18th, 12:00-13:00
Instructor: Kristín Heba Gísladóttir, Executive Director at Varða - The Labor Market Research Institute

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in immigrants in Iceland and their participation in the Icelandic labor market is substantial. This has played a significant role in the country's economic growth and has enriched society. However, research indicates that the status of immigrants differs from that of natives. This lecture will discuss this disparity based on the findings of research conducted by Varða - The Labor Market Research Institute. It will address financial status, housing market status, health, and working conditions of immigrants. Additionally, it will cover the situation of people with a foreign background who were born in Iceland but have a parent born abroad, as studies show that this group does not fare equally well in the labor market compared to natives.

Kristín Heba Gísladóttir has a BA in Psychology and an M.Sc. in Resource Economics. She has served as the Executive Director of Varða since its establishment. ASÍ and BSRB founded Varða in 2020 with the aim of enhancing research on the status of working labour in the Icelandic labor market. Special emphasis has been placed on examining the situation of various groups, including immigrants. Through good research, it is possible to strengthen the overall associations and unions to fight for better living conditions for all members of the labor movement in Iceland.

The lecture will only be available online. It will be streamed at the announced time, available through the provided link throughout that day and then accessible on My Pages on VR’s webpage for 30 days after that. This lecture has English subtitles.
