East Iceland

East Iceland is unique for its majestic mountains, diverse culture, reindeer and bird life among other things. A large number of tourists make their way around East Iceland every year, foreign tourists who arrive with the Norræna ferry, as well as many Icelanders.

East Iceland offers tourists a little bit of everything in nature. It can be said that East Iceland includes the greatest contrasts of nature and landscape that can be found in Iceland. The main part of East Iceland is in the basalt area to the east, where large mountain ranges make an impression on the landscape, while the northwestern part is in the tuff area where the landscape is young and immature, valleys narrow and shallow and no mountains exist except the volcanoes.
