During the winter, rental payments need to be finalised for holiday cottages at the time of booking. During the summer, payments are handled after allotment. If a rental payment is made using the Contingency Fund, it is exempt from withholding tax, up to ISK 72,000 per year (in 2024).

Please familiarise yourselves with the rules of conduct before renting a holiday cottage.

For more information on VR holiday cottages, call VR service centre at 510 1700 or email us at orlofshus@vr.is.

The allotment of holiday cottages for VR members is divided into two seasons: summer and winter.

  • The lease period for holiday cottages and apartments during summer is from 5 June to 29 August 2024.

The rental period during summer is one week for each VR member, from 17:00 on Thursday to 12:00 at noon on Thursday in all places except Miðhúsaskógur, where the rental period is a one week from 17:00 on Wednesday to 12:00 on Wednesday.

In 2024, the summer rental leasing is subject to the new rules, as follows:

    • The application period is from 15 January to 29 February.
    • All members that apply have equal chance of allotment, irrespective of when they apply during the application period.
    • Only members that have not received a rental at any time during the last three summers can apply for a summer rental.
    • You can apply for rentals through My Pages at vr.is. You can apply for maximum of three holiday cottages, and applications shall be ranked for priority. While the application period is open, you can see the number of applications for each cottage at any given time.
    • When the application period is up, at the end of February, winners are drawn electronically from the applications received.
    • If a VR member does not get the holiday cottage they picked as option no. 1, they have a chance of receiving option 2, or option 3. No waiting list registrations will be allowed, if none of the options is free.
    • Members that are allotted a holiday cottage receive a notification in an email or by text, and have 10 days to confirm and finalise a payment via My Pages. If payment has not been made within that period of time, the holiday cottage will be relisted on the holiday website a few days later.
    • All members can apply for unrented holiday cottages after allocation, at which time they are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Cottage No. 14b in Miðhúsaskógur is designed for people with disability and VR prioritises people with disability for this holiday cottage. If this cottage is not fully rented during the period, it is open for applications like any other free cottages during the weeks it is free.

  • Unchanged arrangement (first come, first served)

The winter allocation of holiday cottages for 2024/2025 starts on 5 February 2024 at 12:00. Allocation of VR holiday cottages during winter is on a first come, first served basis, and applications are made on My Pages.

    • A minimum of two nights can be booked during the winter.
